Tom Sachs, born in New York in 1966, is an artist and designer whose work often explores the intersections of art, space travel, and consumer culture. Before he started making sneakers, he made a name for himself with installations, sculptures, and works that reinterpret everyday objects, reference Bauhaus or NASA aesthetics, and often feature craftsmanship, materiality, and function.

The collaboration between Tom Sachs and Nike officially began around 2009, when Sachs and then-Nike CEO Mark Parker met, and the idea of working together was born. In 2012, the first Mars Yard was released as part of the NikeCraft sub-brand, which combines Sachs' studio values of function, materiality, experimentation, and artistic ambition with Nike's technology, product development, and production capabilities.

HISTORY OF THE MARS YARD SNEAKER AND ITS DEVELOPMENT

The first Mars Yard 1.0 was launched in 2012. The design was inspired by Sachs' fascination with space travel and NASA engineering, reflected in the materials, shapes, and utilitarian aesthetic. The original version used robust materials such as ripstop and blends of mesh and suede, and was primarily intended to be worn and not just as a collector's item.

The Mars Yard 2.0 followed in 2017, bringing improvements in durability and wearability, such as stronger mesh and revisions to the upper material. Many of the conceptual elements remained the same: the striking color scheme (natural-colored materials, distinctive red Swoosh), the functional details, and the combination of artistic appeal with practical application.

In the meantime, experimental variants were also created, such as the Mars Yard Overshoe, a kind of weatherproof cover version designed to give the shoe even more functionality. There was also a “2.5” version, which was not widely released but went out as a test sample in small numbers to selected wearers, the so-called Wear Testers.

NIKE MARS YARD 3.0 AND THE RELEASE

Now to the latest chapter: the Mars Yard 3.0 was officially announced in 2025 as the next evolution of the previous versions. The most important new features are:

  • New midsole construction with Nike React Foam for greater comfort and better cushioning.
  • Natural rubber on the outsole plus a carbon fiber shank (reinforcing plate) to improve stability and rebound.
  • Revised upper material: open mesh (polyester), suede overlays, TPU toe cap, and heel clip for additional protection and durability. Details such as oversized eyelets, a lace keeper loop, and modified lacing have also been added.

The packaging and surrounding elements have been redesigned: the packaging is intended to be reusable, and the launch will be accompanied by a digital program (the I.S.R.U. app/summer camp) where users can complete missions and challenges.
